Dame Nita Barrow

Barbados

Founding Board Member of Global Fund for Women

Dame Nita (deceased) was the first woman to be Governor General of Barbados.
She was Convener of the NGO Forum for the Decade of Women in Nairobi, Kenya, 1985.

Upon hearing the idea for creating the Global Fund for Women, Dame Nita Barrow replied, “Anne (Anne Firth Murray), you want to raise a pool of money to give away to women to do what they want to do rather than what donors want them to do, right? If you do this, it will make a difference.” The next day she joined the board of an organization that didn’t even exist, except as a dream.

Dame Nita embodied compassion, leadership, clarity, warmth, wisdom and kindness, all rolled into one mighty woman.
