Programs & Services

Overview

We estimate that over 20,000 people pass through our doors each year, for a range of programs, services, and celebrations offered by TWB and affiliated organizations.

Please note that there are 11 organizations that operate within The Women's Building, and each runs separately. For more information on programs offered by our tenant organizations, see Affiliated Organizations.

Strategies

Our programs work towards our mission in three key ways:

  • Increasing the economic security of individual women and girls;through services for individuals.
  • Building community among women, girls, and our allies; through cultural arts activities.
  • Promoting social change to improve the status of women and girls;through education, capacity building and collaboration.

Services for Economic Security & Well-Being

Our services for individuals are offered through our Community Resource Room (CRR). The services are designed to support low-income women, but anyone who supports our goals is welcome. All services are FREE and available in English and Spanish unless otherwise noted.

You can find the CRR bilingual brochure here.

Immigrant Assistance Food Pantry Helps Our Community Make Ends Meet!!!

Here, in the Mission District, home to nearly 60,000 residents, one in three people live with the daily threat of hunger.  (Source: San Francisco Food Bank “Local Hunger Study 2007.)  For immigrants in our community, language barriers, the food stamp application’s complexity and bureaucratic red tape prevent many immigrants from receiving the few benefits for which they qualify.

Therefore, our weekly Food Pantry, in partnership with the San Francisco Food Bank, provides over 160 immigrant families with the food they need to cook healthy meals in their own homes thus maintaining their independence and a higher quality of life.  Organized in a farmers’ market-style, clients select the foods that best meet their needs.  From fresh fruits and vegetables to bread and rice, each client receives much-needed, nutritious food that is otherwise unaffordable.

Challenge your assumptions and take on the life of a full-time working mom, or a war vet, a grandmother or a family in the Outer Mission and see if you can get enough to eat this week in this powerful interactive exercise: http://www.sffoodbank.org/about_hunger/h101.html
