San Franciscans have only slow dial-up connections. (2015)

Our computer lab began in 2012 in the Community Resource Room and then we started recruiting for a technology volunteer that could assist clients with their tech needs and provide technology certificates. Some of the things clients learned were how to reset their passwords, navigating the internet, and typing. With the spread of COVID in 2020 we paused the tech program to prioritize the safety of our staff and community members and our services became remote. All throughout the pandemic we received multiple questions about whether or not we would reintroduce tech classes or bring the computer lab again.

The Women’s Building brings back one-on-one tech tutoring in January! Our tech volunteers will be meeting with clients on Wednesdays from 1-4pm to help them with basic computer skills such as typing, navigating the internet, email basics as well as how to use a smartphone.

At The Women’s Building we understand the importance of increasing digital equity, especially among women, low-income, and non-English speaking residents to advance their wellbeing. San Francisco Digital Equity defines digital equity as “Full and equitable access to digital technology and its benefits so all San Francisco residents and communities can thrive, regardless of demographics.” In order to continue our mission to provide low barrier services and resources for women, we are now offering tech tutoring in Spanish and English in the Community Resource Room. We look forward to the client’s engagement with this service and learning about our community’s changing needs in this digital society.
